Visual Arts Class Descriptions

If you have not made a decision about which middle-school path you want to take—music or art—Intro to Fine Arts I may be just the class you need. In this class you will spend one semester in the art studio and one semester in the music classroom. Below is a brief description of what you will be learning each semester.

 

Art Semester

  • Art history (artists, artistic periods, and artistic styles)
  • Art appreciation (understanding what makes specific art appealing)
  • Basic care and usage of materials used to create art
  • Basic techniques for creating art

 

Music Semester

  • Music theory (reading music)
  • Music history (famous musicians, musical periods, and styles of music)
  • Making music (body percussion, bucket drumming, piano, and other instruments as time permits.) 


In each semester class about 75% of time will be spent learning about content and about 25% will be spent creating music/art.

Art I would be a good choice for you if you are interested in spending the entire year in the art studio learning about 

  • Art history (artists, artistic periods, and artistic styles)
  • Art appreciation (understanding what makes specific art appealing)
  • Basic care and usage of materials used in creating art
  • Basic techniques for creating art

 

Art I will be about 50% learning about art and about 50% in the studio creating art. Also,  you will do this all year rather than just one semester. 

Intermediate Art II would be a great choice for you if you wish to

  • build and strengthen your artistic skills 
  • create artwork that explores your personal interests and ideas 
  • explore traditional media (drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and fiber arts) 
  • explore digital media (3-D printing, illustration, animation, Canva design, and digital photography and videography). 

 

In Intermediate Art I, about 25% of time will be spent learning about art and about 75% of the time will be spent in the studio creating art.

 

**To be considered for this course you need a recommendation from your current art teacher. They can email that to [email protected] and [email protected] If you are unable to do that, you should submit a portfolio (containing 3 original artworks) for review.

Advanced Art II is for students who

  • are highly motivated and self-directed 
  • wish to focus on producing high-quality artwork
  • would like to design and create, banners, posters, logos, and other artworks that would benefit the school and the art program

 

Studio time in Advanced Art II will be 90-100% devoted to independent and student led skill practice and artwork production.

 

**To be considered for this course you must get approval from your current EPMS art teacher or a letter of recommendation from a non-EPMS art teacher. If you are unable to do either of these, you must submit a portfolio (containing 3 original artworks) for review. 

Art III would be a great choice for you if you are interested in learning about

    • art history (artists, artistic periods, and artistic styles)
    • art appreciation (gaining the knowledge and understanding of what makes art appealing), 
    • basic care and usage of materials used in creating art 
    • basic techniques for creating art

 

In Art III about 75% of time will be spent learning about art and about 25% will be spent in the studio creating art.

Intermediate Art III would be a great choice for you if you wish to

  • build and strengthen your artistic skills 
  • creating artwork that explores your personal interests and ideas
